L. A. after the rain

By bartryan | February 21, 2011

This city is usually covered in cake batter, but after a heavy rain it gets washed off and sparkles like a christmas tree. The sun is shining, all the streets feel safer and all the politicians seem more honest.

Back from Mars…

By bartryan | February 12, 2011

what a long strange trip the last few months have been. like everyone else on the planet, I have been leaping over  the hurdles and nursing the bumps and bruises 2010 left behind… I know I have been remiss in my posts the last little while. My deepest apologies.

I was joking with a friend of mine a few weeks ago saying the last year was like getting dragged behind a horse… like waiting for your dental appointment while you can hear the drill in the next room… Like waking up with a bad hangover next to your cousin.

But this year has started out brilliantly. The EP Glory Bound is now FINISHED… Yes I know, miracles do happen. Early reviews are very strong and it will be available in some form or another soon. Also, The economy is picking up and being optimistic seems to be less and less unacceptable. I think people are just sick and tired of playing small, expecting less and planning on being pissed off and screwed over by  Wall street, big business, big banks, corrupt officials and the general scumbaggery we run into daily. And what do we see in  Egypt? a political miracle where the army didn’t crack down and the people won.

Besides, I just got an IPAD. Awesome!

More coming very soon… don’t want to say anything yet. Stay tuned.

God bless and keep you all, especially you atheists,

Bart

Hurry up and Wait…

By bartryan | July 15, 2010

Well, it’s almost done. All the guitars are recorded, and all the lead Vocals. Now we have to finish up a couple of details and do the mixing.

This just takes time and patience. You make a mix, go live with it for a few days, decide to change a bunch of stuff, schedule new studio time, and do it again. This all happens along with all the other daily craziness of living in L.A during the toughest economy in generations, but you just keep driving on. Should be done in a couple of weeks.

In the Mouth of Madness…

By bartryan | July 7, 2010

I spent about a week like a wild animal in my place recording guitar tracks. The upstairs of my hipster Silverlake condo has a small studio in it. I ran a bunch of cabling out to the hipster laundry room so I could isolate the sound of my amp and work on guitar parts. I would get up in the morning, go into the studio, mess with ideas, record, decide it was terrible, record some more, throw my guitar out the God Damned window, record again, play it for a couple people, Try to sleep, decide to quite music, smoke a cigarette, eat something, drink Tequila, record some more, and finally abandon all hope. This is the standard process for me in writing, recording and producing…

Chasing the Devil’s Keys

These are pictures of me over at Jamieson’s house. I went over there to work on Keyboard parts a little while ago. We Banged out ideas and actually put a few final parts down. Then we went into the studio a few days later and finished it all up. Jamo is a ridiculous musician… RIDICULOUS. He also makes a smokin’ margarita.

You may wonder why there are no pictures of us actually In the studio… Well the guy who owns it is a bit eccentric and he doesn’t want anyone taking photos inside … Maybe he’s afraid the photos will steal his soul? I’d go somewhere else, but this is my favorite place to record, ever. Now we work on Guitars…

Give and Take

By bartryan | June 10, 2010

I could spend a bunch of time telling you how incredibly shitty this week was. How Earth-shakingly,

Mind-numbingly, God-cursingly, let’s-just-drink-Drano and be done shitty this week was, but I won’t.

What I will say is that we started recording the project two days ago and it went brilliantly. I couldn’t be happier… about the recording. Everything just worked. We recorded five songs and they all came out great. Fueled by coffee, adrenaline, nicotine and youthful angst, we seemed to find the perfect place for every groove and every note. Some days in the studio are like pulling teeth and some are effortless. This was the latter, and then some.

You don’t always get what you want, but sometimes…

Love to all.
